The painting is entitled “Pair of Magpies with Bamboo and Tree,” but the butterfly mounting actually shows Chinese bulbuls on branches looking down at bamboo. The birds are in abbreviated brushwork fusing “boneless” washes with “sketching ideas,” the major parts lined with dark ink. The dry branches and oblique bamboo leaves are not very refined but still pure and appropriate with simple charm. The following five leaves by the emperor in running script are for the Nanlü song cycle, the names in red with the rest in black ink mounted on individual leaves in the folding leaf format.(20120407)
